Jack and Jill: Movie Review

"Jack and Jill" is one of the worst comedies we have seen ever. Even for the usual standards we set for an Adam Sandler and Happy Madison film, the film just feels like a slap in your face when you watch it. No, the comedy is not stale, in fact it's actually funny at times but this come at the expense of things that constitutes a real movie. For sure, you will laugh but at the end of the day, the blatant lack of effort and direction and the long unnerving sequences will frustrate you and will definitely make you wish you didn't give your hard-earned cash to Mr. Sandler's pockets.

Jack Warren (Adam Sandler) is a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles who hates his twin sister with all his guts. One day, Dunkin Donuts, Jack's biggest client, demands that they want Al Pacino to promote their new product the "Dunkacino" or they will find a new ad agency to do it. Jack knows that Al Pacino won't do the commercial not until Al meets his twin sister, Jill (Adam Sandler) who finds Jill's Bronx upbringing very attractive. Now, Jack must find a way to make Jill fall in love with Al - even if it means that Jill will stay with his family a little while longer than expected.

It is implied in the movie that Jack hates Jill to the core. She is one loud, annoying, rowdy and insensitive woman. It's amazing that these sentiments are the same things we felt while watching "Jack and Jill". Jill is one annoying character that isn't funny at all and it does not help for the fact that she stars in endless and long sequences. It was as if they wanted to make this film longer but they really didn't know how to (it's so shallow that's why) so they just shoved countless banter in almost all scenes. We also have to note that even though the film was funny, it was more brought up by Al Pacino and Eugenio Derbez's character, Felipe. Without them this film would probably be un-watchable. And don't get us started with the blatant product placements that are scattered all throughout the movie. Yes, there's an ad agency bit in there but there are also times where there are placements outside of Jack's office. As Al Pacino said in the final scene, "no one should ever watch this", we have the same sentiments for "Jack and Jill". There's really no reason why you should ever watch it and it is a shame that it was even made.

Rating: half a reel

Why you should watch it:
- please don't watch this trash. this is one of the worst comedies ever.

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- blatant product placement in a Hollywood film
- Jill as a character was annoying
- the sequences were just very long and boring

Kristen Stewart to Go On the Road: Official Trailer

Prior to reprising her role as Bella Swan in the final installment of The Twilight Saga this November, Kristen Stewart will tackle a couple of iconic tales.

There will be her June role as a certain fairy tale character in Snow White and the Huntsman, and, prior to that blockbuster, her participation in On the Road, a big screen adaption of the classic Jack Keroac's novel.

It follows the trail of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), who gets caught up in the adventures of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and travels across the country with him and with 16-year old wife, Mary Lou (Stewart). The following trailer doesn't give us a great deal of Kristen, but we do see her topless back and a scene of her dancing.

Bobby Brown Sends His Love To Whitney In Concert

Being on tour right after the supposed love of his life unexpectedly died? That?s his prerogative.

Last night in Mississippi,Bobby Brownpaid tribute to the lateWhitney Houston, thanking his loved ones and fans for their support during this difficult time and sending his love to her wherever she is right now.

And then? well, here?s what he said:

?Life is life ? you have to move on sometimes ? I love [Whitney] like I love God ? my name is BAD ASS Bobby Brown.?

And there goes the tender moment.

Maybe its just us, but we would think that Bobby would be trying harder to spend this very difficult time with his daughter Bobbi Kristina. Not for nothing, but even if Whitney?s family is shielding her away from him, what kind ofmessagedoes it send her to see her father right back on tour days after her mother?s death?

His daughter. That should be is prerogative.

The Thinking Jacket: A New Trend

(Photo: \!/_PeacePlusOne)

A new paper in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology finds that elementary school teachers worldwide might want to start encouraging students to put on their ?thinking coats? instead of ?thinking caps.?

Researchers Hajo Adam and Adam D. Galinsky found that?wearing a white lab coat ? a piece of clothing associated with care and attentiveness ? improved performance on tests requiring close and sustained attention.? The researchers found no effects when the coat was identified as a painter?s coat. ?The main conclusion that we can draw from the studies is that the influence of wearing a piece of clothing depends onbothits symbolic meaning and the physical experience of wearing the clothes,? write the authors. ?There seems to be something special about the physical experience of wearing a piece of clothing.?

Adam and Galinsky point out that their research raises interesting questions: ?Does wearing the robe of a priest or judge make people more ethical? Does putting on the uniform of a firefighter make people act more courageously? And perhaps even more interestingly, do the effects of physically wearing a particular form of clothing wear off over time, as people become habituated to it??

Frozen Planet: TV Review

The Bottom Line

Frozen Planet is one of those instantly riveting series where you marvel at the beauty and majesty of it all but also spare more than a passing thought for the effort involved.

Airdate

8 p.m. Sunday, March 18 (Discovery)

Anyone who ever watched Planet Earth or Life needs absolutely no nudge toward the brilliance that is Frozen Planet, an upcoming co-production from the BBC and Discovery. Once you've seen these supercommitted, time-intensive, lovingly crafted explorations of the natural world, there's just no going back.

These are the kinds of series that are tailor-made for high definition and provide some of the most compelling nature and wildlife moments you'll ever see. Frozen Planet, thankfully, keeps up that tradition.

PHOTOS: 17 New Shows Premiering in 2012

The seven-part series, kicking off March 18, was filmed over four years and focuses on the Arctic and Antarctic regions. From penguins and owls to killer whales, elephant seals and a whole lot more, Frozen Planet is one of those instantly riveting series where you marvel at the beauty and majesty of it all but also spare more than a passing thought for the effort involved.

The camerawork here is phenomenal. On the ground, in the air, underwater -- the viewer consistently gets the sense that a very dedicated group of people made this come together. In fact, there will be a behind-the-scenes "making of" episode that's not to be missed. It's not just camera operators being blown around in 80 mph winds at 60-below that rivets, but also getting closer than comfortable to polar bears and being in the right spot when four or five killer whales decide to pop straight up out of the water next to the ice floe they're on. Some of the nature in Frozen Planet is so strangely foreign, you'll think it's CGI.

The making-of segment also neatly encapsulates why work on this epic took four years (or more) to come to fruition. While the producers and camerapeople got an inordinate amount of beautiful and stunning footage, it didn't happen like magic. Time-lapse photography is a major component of Frozen Planet, and you'd be hard-pressed to find an instance where the process was more effectively used. But it obviously took planning and a ton of patience. The first four days of filming didn't even get under way because two participants were trapped in a remote outpost while winds hitting 200 mph lashed their meager (but well-grounded) shed.

More than once, those involved in the making of Frozen Planet confess to being a little scared or concerned -- whether of flying in bad weather or the chance of getting caught in a storm that could kill them, the obstacles to filming in two of the harshest places on the planet were enormous.

EXCLUSIVE: Better Than Penguin Cam? Watch 'Frozen Planet's' Most Awkward Sea Lion

But for the viewer, the efforts pay off wonderfully. The HD cameras capturing the making of snowflakes or flying over the least discovered parts of the world or tracking icebergs bigger than any skyscraper open up a world never before seen. Mere description can't do justice to some of the more amazing aspects. For instance, time-lapse photography catches the creation of a saltwater icicle that creeps slowly to the ocean floor, freezing as it goes then freezing everything it touches. It's like watching ice as lightning -- underwater.

There's also, as one might expect, numerous cute animal encounters (particularly baby polar bears), but if you're watching with family members, keep in mind that animals eating animals on the food chain is a requisite part of these shows, as are a variety of mating rituals.

STORY: Vivienne Westwood Shows Her Support for Discovery Channel?s Frozen Planet

One of the greatest and most memorable scenes is an event with killer whales that was recorded here for the first time on television -- according to the producers of Frozen Planet, scientists first witnessed the behavior in orcas in 1975. Here, we see it happen over and over again with stunning precision: Three or four killer whales swim in unison toward an ice floe with a seal on it. Just before they get to the ice, the whales use their tails to create a powerful wave that knocks the seal into the water. When the producers finish covering the orca storylines, you'll come away with newfound appreciation of how damned smart those whales are.

Narrated by Alec Baldwin, Frozen Planet will kick off with a two-hour premiere March 18 and run each Sunday through April 15. Here's hoping the BBC and Discovery are out somewhere else, spending years waiting for the best shot at the right moment so we at home can swoon on our couches at the wonder of it all.

From a Guy's Viewpoint...Jon

A few favorite hobbies/pastimes: Reading, Shooting, Building/Fixing computer's, gaming with my bro's
Favorite subject in school: English and History
Favorite book: Wow, that is hard. Probably "The Hobbit"
Favorite movie: Probably the Lord of the Ring's (all of them!), and The Matrix
Something you look forward to every day:Wakingup in the morning, going up the stairs to thesmilingface of my Mom and giving her a big, warm, hug. (somethingI have missed doing for the past month, being across the country and all.)
1) What are your thoughts on modesty? When a woman is trying to flaunt her body, such as wearing a shirt that shows off her midriff, wearing ridiculously short skirts, so on and so forth, is going too far. We don't need to be seeing your belly button to talk with you.
2) Some of us feel that we either give too much effort, or not enough, in worrying about the way we dress. What is your suggestion to how you wish girls would dress? What do you like to see girls wearing? I think it is up to the particular person in terms of whattypeof clothing they wear. If she prefers jeans, dresses, or skirts is up to her, just as she is not intending to be provocative. I, personally, like jeans.
4) A lot of girls worry about looking chic around guys?but what do you consider pretty? I consider someone just beingthemself, not trying to dress/act to please the men around them.
5) Do guys ever notice changes in girls? Hair styles, clothes, etc.?Definitely! A haircut is one of the more noticeable thing's, for me at least.
6) What is something that you want/look for, the most, in your future wife? I would firstly, want her to love, honor, andcherish, and seek afterthe Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, I would want her to have a good sense ofhumor! I would also want her to love me, for who I am. And I think, as I get older, God will reveal more to me what I need to be looking for in a wife, as I am only 16.
7) Do you often feel peer pressure from your friends? In any way, but mostly in the standards that you have set for your life. Oh yeah, I think peer pressure is a good thing at times. It?s really has helped me to shape up when I needed to. But if a friend is trying to change you with their word/action's to just fit what they want, I can?t stand it.
8) What do you consider flirting and what do you think of a girl when she flirts with you? I think sometimes guys take too many things as flirting. When a girl isflamboyant, she is notalwaysflirting with you (they'redefinitelyare exceptions....), she just enjoys life. And as for what I think of when a girl flirt's with me, it is hard to say. If she is being obvious about it, I can get a bit annoyed, maybe confront her on why she is doing what she is doing.
9) How do you feel about dating? I think it is a bit of a messed-up system, going from partner to partner until you THINK you like the right one. Now ? done the right way: where you are serious about the date you are on, and not just on itbecauseyour friend told you the girl is hot, I think God can use it to bringpeopletogether. I know he did my parents.
10) If you agree w/ courting, how much involvement from YOUR parents do you believe is appropriate in helping you make a final choice in your future wife? None, some, or a lot? Please elaborate on your answer. I personally want my Dad and Mom to be involved in all of it. As I am young and foolish, I want to have someone who is older, and wiser than I am, around to guide me to do what is right.
11) When you?re interested in a girl, do you focus on her family too? Do you make it a point to get to know them as much as you want to get to know her? The Father and Mother raised her, the sisters and brothers know her every aspect. It would be to my advantage to get to know them, as best I can.
12) What is your view on college for girls? If she wants to go to college, more power to her! If God has blessed her with the knowledge for a higher education, I see no reason why not.
13) What is your dream job? And why? Hmm, my dream job, wow. I?d have to say something in thetechnical field. God has given me a real enjoyment of all things to do with computers.
14) What do you think the man?s role is in the home ? compared to the woman?s? The man is there to lead his family in the word of God, to love his wife with all of his heart, and to teach his children in the way they should go. The women is there to love, support, and respect her husband, and if need b,e pick him up when he is down. The mother is also the cornerstone of the children's life. She is the one who spends the most time in their lives. And from what I have seen, she is the one who is constantly working towards the future for them.
15) How many kids would you like to have? As many as God blesses me with. 4-6 sounds about right.
16) A lot of guys like using sarcasm around girls?do you know why that is? That is a hard one. I personally use sarcasm with everyone (noticing this over the past few months.) But i would guess they are either trying to impress them, or they feel awkward around them.
18) Is there anything that you would appreciate girls doing differently in order to help you maintain your purity? Probably not wearing clothing that reveals a large portion of their body.
19) What do you think about guys and girls hugging? As long as it is just as friends, and not romantic in any way, it is fine.
20) When do you plan to have your first kiss? On my wedding day, as soon as the pastor say's... "You may kiss the bride". I will kiss her exactly as he says those words! (or whatever variation of that phrase he uses.)
21) How will you respond if God's plan is out of sync with your own? I know for a fact, that my plans are going to change according to God's will. Heck, I?ve already had my "plan's" changed many time's. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a]have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28.
22) What do you think of girls posting pictures of guys on their blog? As long as it is not meant to start a sexual discussion about that guy, i see no problem with it.
23) Do you guys sometimes get weirded out by being friends with girls? Nope.
24) What is one thing that girls do that you hate? When they try too much to please the men around them, just be yourself, when the time comes, God will bring the one for you.
25) To what degree should a guy and girl just 'be friends'? Well if they are below the age of 18,friendshipis the only thing that should go on between a guy and a girl. And over that age, when you feel you are being led to the one for you, talk totheirMom and Dad.
Thank you so much for doing this interview for us, Jon! God bless you!

Here?s what Cirque du Soleil special events directorYasmine Khalilhad to say about it:

?The theme is very much in line with paying tribute to the movie-theater experience.?

Khalil also mentioned that their show would be ?unique for this one evening,? and that they wouldn?t be taking anything from their cinema-themed showIris(aside from the fact thatDanny Elfmanwill once again compose the music).

The Avengers Latest Trailer Just Looks Epic

We definitely have doubts on how "The Avengers" will pan out when it comes to theaters this May. Not with the superhero ensemble that it tries to create, it's definitely a way where a film can fail big time. But after watching it's latest trailer (which you can catch after the break), we have to reconsider our thoughts about "The Avengers". Everything feels, looks epic. The clincher is probably the final few seconds were Tony Stark and a huge-ass serpent like machine blew our minds away.

John Carter: Film Review

The Bottom Line

Derivative but charming and fun enough, Disney's mammoth sci-fier is both spectacular and a bit cheesy.

Opens

Friday, March 9 (Disney)

Director

Andrew Stanton

Cast

Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Bryan Cranston, Polly Walker, Daryl Sabara

Given that it's based on a pioneering work of science fiction, there can be little surprise that John Carter feels like a hodgepodge of any number of familiar elements, some of which were no doubt borrowed by others from Edgar Rice Burroughs and brought full circle here. This Disney extravaganza is a rather charming pastiche, if perhaps not one with sufficient excitement and razzle-dazzle to justify the reported $250 million production budget. Neither classic nor fiasco, the film will likely delight sci-fi geeks most of all, but there's enough here for general Disney audiences as well to generate solid box office worldwide.

PHOTOS: 10 Biggest Book-to-Big Screen Adaptations of the Last 25 Years

If Avatar had never existed, it's possible that John Carter would have seemed like more of a genre breakthrough, given the premise of a distant planet penetrated by an Earthling who begins an interplanetary romance and is ultimately accepted into the alien culture (Mars here even has a huge arboreal structure at the heart of things). But echoes resonate from many other sources as well: What came first, the Jedi of Star Wars or the Jeddak leaders here? Was Taylor Kitsch's buff loincloth look inspired by how good Charlton Hestonlooked similarly attired in Planet of the Apes? Doesn't John Carter's background consist of one part Outlaw Josey Wales and one part Indiana Jones? And doesn't the specter of the ancient Greeks noticeably hover over the everlasting battles being fought among the various neighbors?

The Princess of Mars, the first work by Burroughs ever published, began being serialized in 1912 and was issued as a novel six years later. Neatly, the author has been brought onstage here in an 1881 framing device, as the young nephew of the just-deceased adventurer John Carter who has been called to New York City to be shown a journal the dead man has intended for Edgar's eyes only.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's A-List Redefined

As in Burroughs' story, Carter is a Confederate soldier drawn west after the Civil War by the lure of gold. But no sooner does he find it than he happens upon a cave massively feared by the Indians, one which serves as a portal to a place that looks very much like the American West but is, in fact, the desert-like Barsoom, that fourth planet in the solar system that has often been fantasized about as a possible home to some form of life.

The first species Carter encounters when he awakens are just-hatching critters that grow up to become Tharks: thin, tusked, six-limbed, greenish-skinned creatures that are quite jumpy about being in year one thousand of their struggle with the nasties from Zodanga, whose arrogant prince, Sab Than (Dominic West), has just acquired a new, lethal amulet. The Zodangans hover about aboard giant airborne craft that look like Star Wars by way of Baron von Munchausen and are accompanied by three holy men, most notably the all-knowing and shape-shifting Matai Shang (Mark Strong).

Even though they're allied with the aristocrats of Helium ? whose elite, including the Jeddak (Ciaran Hinds) and his daughter Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), are kitted out with British accents, chintzy costumes and the occasional bad wig reminiscent of a 1950s Ray Harryhausen adventure ? the poor Tharks desperately need more help if they hope to survive. When they see how Carter can leap tall rocks in a single bound, by virtue of the thin atmospheric conditions, they decide he's their man.

It would take repeated viewings to determine how many times Carter is captured and then escapes in the story line devised by screenwriters Andrew Stanton, Mark Andrewsand Michael Chabon. More a series of incidents than a gracefully composed drama of rhythmic arcs and elegantly defined acts, the film finally settles its principal attention on the dilemma of Princess Dejah, whose high-minded scientific orientation (reminiscent of that of Rachel Weisz's Hypatia in Agora) contributes to her disinclination to play obedient daughter and marry the venal Sab Than for political reasons, as her father requests. With Kitsch and Collins having shared a previous life together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, their characters here bask in the sight of two moons as they compare notes on the structure of the solar system and, in an appealingly unconventional, unsentimental way, get together.

Stanton, who directed Finding Nemo and WALL-E, co-directed A Bug's Life and had a hand in writing all three Toy Story features, here follows Brad Birdby three months in moving from Pixar animated eminence to live-action fare. Although the result is quite a mishmash, dramatic coherence prevails over visual flair; the colors, skin tones, image sharpness and cohesion of diverse pictorial elements are less than stellar, though the 3D is effective, with comparatively little brightness sacrificed by donning glasses. (The film was reviewed in Imax 3D.) For a Pixar graduate piece, humor is notably lacking.

Long-haired, bearded and skimpily clad through most of it, Kitsch fills the action-hero bill, neither more nor less. With raven-black hair framing lagoon-blue eyes, Collins, who was an arrestingly unconventional Portia in The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino eight years ago, also was a far from predictable Hollywood-style choice here, so sharply does she attack a standard-issue part. In support, Strong and James Purefoy, the latter as a lightly impudent factotum from Helium, supply the most color.

Morgan Freeman and E'Dena Hines: It's Over?

Morgan Freeman has reportedly dumped his step-granddaughter, E'Dena Hines, for another young girlfriend named Ellie, according to tabloid reports.

The story of the 74-year-old reportedly dating E'Dena Hines a few years ago. Hines, now 29, was even said to be a teen when they were first involved.

That's ... probably not even true. But it was never denied, and the rumor stuck.

Edena Hines

However, it seems that the Academy Award winner has moved on from pursuing his own step-granddaughter to relationship to a younger Filipino woman.

"Morgan rang in the New Year by planting a passionate kiss on his new gal Ellie, who's an accountant in Los Angeles," a source said.

Friends believe the relationship could be serious because Morgan also invited Ellie's mom and sister. "Morgan was having a great time," the source says.

"They kept kissing. They're definitely an item."

Sure they are. Good to know.

What can Eeyore and Tigger Teach Bernanke About Monetary Policy?

(Photo: Loren Javier)

What can Eeyore and Tigger tell us about the current state of monetary policy? A lot. At least that?s the argument thatBetsey Stevensonand I make inour new columnforBloomberg View.

The Fed is now engaged in the game of ?forward guidance??they?ve announced that they anticipate keeping interest rates at zero, until late 2014?and hope that it will shape the recovery. But what effects will this announcement have? To figure this out, let?s visit two of the greatest ever Fed Chairmen: Eeyore and Tigger.

It could be that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is like Eeyore:

Eeyore is a true dismal scientist, who sees bad news everywhere. He?s sure the economy will be in the doldrums for years. Indeed, he?s so worried that folks who don?t understand his pessimistic outlook will make bad decisions that he gives a speech warning them about it. He says the economy is so weak that he?ll need to keep rates low for several years.

Eeyore?s message is so sobering that it mutes the desired stimulus effect of the low interest rates. After all, why would you buy anything, or invest in producing it, if you have just learned that some of the smartest forecasters in the country think the economic outlook is so awful that they dare not raise rates until 2014?

Or alternatively, perhaps he?s more like Tigger:

Chairman Tigger has a totally different approach. He figures that the prospect of a terrific party will revive everyone?s animal spirits. He also knows what folks are thinking: Every time the economy gets going, the Fed spoils the party by taking away the punch bowl ? that is, by raising interest rates to keep inflation in check. So Tigger gives a speech promising to keep interest rates low for several years ? even when the economy recovers.

The prospect of low interest rates sustaining a long and robust recovery leads everyone to start spending. After all, good times are just around the corner.

Notice the problem here? Eeyore and Tigger both did very similar things?they each announced that interest rates would be low for several years?but each had a different effect. What?s up?

Eeyore is providing what economists call ?outlook guidance? ? he?s sharing what his economic-forecasting team thinks about the future. By contrast, Tigger is providing ?policy guidance? ? telling us what the central bank is going to do, and promising it will do it, no matter what.

So is Bernanke taking a page from Eeyore?s playbook, or from Tigger?s? The most recentFedstatement says that it ?currently anticipates that economic conditions?including low rates of resource utilization and a subdued outlook for inflation over the medium run?are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least through late 2014.? Sounds like Eeyore, right? After all, he says that interest rates will be low only because the Fed isforecasting?low rates of resource utilization.? Bernanke ?anticipates? low interest rates, but he?s quite clearly not promising them. San Francisco Fed President John Williams has been even clearer that the Fed is pursuing Eeyore?s strategy, saying that?our statements are not an absolute commitment to keep rates near zero. It?s simply the FOMC?s current judgment about the best future course of policy. If the economic outlook changes, then the guidance could change too.?

The problem with Eeyore, is that he doesn?t much stimulate the economy:

Economistsstudiedthis issue in the early 2000s, and concluded that when you can?t push interest rates any lower, Tigger?s strategy is best. Markets want to know that the Fed is committed to helping the recovery and won?t risk it to fight the specter of inflation?

Small as it may sound, the distinction is important. Businesses are always suspicious that Bernanke may try to sound like Tigger, but revert to being Eeyore when the recovery starts. To succeed at the game of forward guidance, Bernanke needs to convince us he?s committed to low rates in the short-term even if the economy improves. No Man's Zone: Berlin Film Review

The Bottom Line

Japanese-French documentary's sensitive depiction of post-Fukushima devastation tiptoes into poetic pretentiousness.

Director / Screenwriter:

Toshi Fujiwara

Producers:

Valrie-Anne Christen, Denis Friedman

Invaluable as historical record but frustratingly inert as a film, No Man's Zone (Mujin chitai) is among the first documentaries to chronicle the devastation of coastal Japan following March 2011's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. Working in areas that, while contaminated with Fukushima radiation, remained inhabited several months after the catastrophes, Toshi Fujiwara elicits moving testimony from the embattled survivors. And although he stumbles when attempting to draw wider conclusions from what his cameras capture, ongoing global interest in this subject will ensure plentiful festival and TV interest. In terms of theatrical distribution outside Japan, there's the possibility of limited play in territories where environmental matters in general and nuclear power in particular are hot-button issues.

Starting with a 360-degree pan of apocalyptic scenes in the decimated town of Ukedo, 41 days after the cataclysm, Fujiwara (best known for 2006's improvised We Can't Go Home Again) delivers raw images via hand-held digital video. Almost immediately, voiceover -- written by Fujiwara and delivered in English by Armenian-Canadian actress Arsine Khanjian -- prompts us to question our response to this harrowing visual material, setting the tone for a film of over-ambitious philosophical scope.

Police officers are observed from a distance in "white protecting gears [sic]... Perhaps they were lost souls..." muses the narrator. The nature and power of disaster footage is examined -- "anger becomes a way to hide our fascination" -- while just after the halfway point there's the information that "for the last hour we've been watching images, just images," underlining the limitations of visual media.

The aftermath of Fukushima is, it goes without saying, a matter of the utmost seriousness. But Fujiwara's default mode of precious solemnity veers towards the po-faced, with Barre Phillips' sonorous strings and soaring angel-voiced choirs deployed to intrusive and counter-productive effect. Compiling what's essentially an elegiac first-person travelogue, Fujiwara is clearly rather fond of his own authorial voice -- as filtered through Khanjian -- but these contributions aren't helped by oddly echoing sound-mixing that employs weird, tinny fading techniques. The verbose voiceover itself frequently strays into faux-profundity -- "it is not that everything is God, but all is God," we're informed at one late juncture - though translation issues might well be a complicating factor at play.

No Man's Zone becomes much more eloquent and engaging when Fujiwara steps back and lets the residents speak for themselves - which he allows them to do for several unbroken minutes at a time. Displaying the famed Japanese qualities of fatalistic stoicism in abundance ("that's life - things happen, good and bad"), his mostly aged interviewees don't hide their polite annoyance at the failings of national and regional governments -- making their points with a dignified simplicity that certainly doesn't need musical or choral accompaniment.

War Horse: Movie Review

"War Horse" astounds not only with its beautiful vistas and devastating war-torn sets. Beyond what is probably one of Steven Spielberg's best cinematography is its supporting actor - no its not a human but in fact a horse. It's so amazing to see how an animal can exude raw emotions like humans do and even though it never speaks, its eyes and its movements speak louder than any words and phrases can do. "War Horse" may have its faults but there is no denying that is is one moving film.

Albert, a young man, witnesses the birth of a horse and from that day onward, he has shown great admiration for the young horse whom he names Joey. One day, his father buys Joey at an auction to help them plow their farmland. But Joey is not a work horse and the family is at risk of losing their farm if they cannot train Joey to do hard labor. Albert perseveres and tames and trains Joey. When they are forcibly parted by the war, Albert vows that he and Joey will meet again.

Two big things for "War Horse" works and its the acting and visuals department. Both combine to make one moving and heartfelt film. It's really amazing when you consider that a majority of the film features a horse's point-of-view and how Spielberg humanized an animal without the use of any special effects just makes the film more special. The film's various vistas where shot perfectly (showing its beauty before and after the war and a realistic gritty tone in between the war). In fact, we really liked the approach "War Horse" takes during its World War I scenes - it showed that war, even the trench war, was as deadly and gruesome as the second one thirty years after. What didn't sell us though is the short running time of the film given the amount of people Joey meets. The film is more than two hours long but it still feels rushed at certain portions. It just wanted to present so many things that it slightly affected how the audience will interact with some of its characters. "War Horse" is one beautiful film both visually and emotionally. It may not be perfect but it is still a powerful film about friendship and war.

Rating: 4 reels

Why you should watch it:
- this is simply one of Spielberg's most visually stunning films
- Spielberg is able to humanize a horse without special effects

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- the running time is long but the movie still feels rushed a bit

John Carter is An Epic Set on Mars

Walt Disney Pictures presents the 3D epic, action?adventure ?John Carter? which is based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic, ?A Princess of Mars?. "John Carter? is set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (or better known to humans as the planet Mars). The film tells the story of former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. More info and the latest trailer of the "John Carter" can be found after the jump.

2012 actually marks the 100th anniversary of Burroughs? character John Carter, the original space hero featured in the series, who has thrilled generations with his adventures on Mars. Over generations, John Carter has become a heroic paradigm across all forms of pop culture. From novels to comic books, artwork to animation, TV and now cinema, the character has inspired some of the most creative minds of the last century.

The director, Andrew Stanton, is actually a big fan and explains what inspired him to bring ?John Carter? to the big screen: ?I stumbled across these books at the perfect age, I was about ten, and I just fell in love with the concept of a human finding himself on Mars, among amazing creatures in a strange new world. A stranger in a strange land. It was a very romantic aspect of adventure and science fiction. I always thought it would be cool to see this realized on the big screen. ?John Carter? is a big epic adventure with romance and action and political intrigue because the subject matter was written so long ago, it was also a bit of an origin of those kinds of stories?a comic book before there were comic books, an adventure story before that became a genre of its own.?

Andrew Stanton directed and co?wrote the screenplay for ?WALL?E? which earned the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature in 2008. His directorial debut is with ?Finding Nemo?, another award-winning film.

Opening across the Philippines sometime in March 2012, ?John Carter? is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures. This is definitely one of the films to watch out for this 2012.

'Halloween 3D' Stalled, Michael Myers Inconsolable

"My Bloody Valentine" and "Drive Angry 3D" collaborators Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer wrote the script for "Halloween 3D," which was slated for this fall, except Dimension Films' Michael Myers tale has been killed off for now.

The 3D entry in the popular slasher franchise has been bumped from the box office schedule with no news of a future release date. The story picked up after Rob Zombie's "Halloween II" film and centered on Laurie Strode in a mental hospital. Supposedly there was a lead part for "Creepshow" actor Tom Atkins.

Michael might be stopped for now, but there's more terror waiting for you past the break in this week's Horror Bites.

'Piranha 3-D' Director Adapting a Vampire Graphic Novel?
"High Tension" and "Piranha 3-D" director Alexandre Aja is currently in talks to film an adaptation of the bloodsucking graphic novel, "Undying Love." When an ex-soldier falls for a vampire, he must battle her maker who is fronted by an army of monsters in the Hong Kong underworld. Comic creators Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman wrote the script for the big screen version. Does Aja have the right combination of action and gore experience to make it work?

'Evil Dead' Remake Gets a 'Cloverfield' Addition
"Cloverfield" actress Jessica Lucas is currently chatting with filmmakers about starring in the upcoming "Evil Dead" remake. She'd appear as the already announced Elizabeth Blackmore and Jane Levy's best friend, and as the fianc of the already cast Shiloh Fernandez. Fede Alvarez is directing the new installment of the iconic horror franchise, which finds five friends in a cabin in the woods while one of them tries to break her drug habit. While there they discover a Book of the Dead ? and if you've seen the Bruce Campbell films, then you know what happens next isn't good. The production gets rolling in April. Hopefully the original team comprised of Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell ? who have signed on as producers ? can steer the newbies in the right direction.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Want to Make a Horror Movie
Seth Rogen and Super Bad pal Evan Goldberg are thinking about writing a horror movie. The Playlist brought the news that the duo want to get their hands bloody in the fright biz, and they've been looking at the success of "Paranormal Activity" for inspiration. Goldberg told the website, "If it was a bit funnier, and more realistic, maybe it would've been even better ? and I did think it was a fantastic movie, I actually really liked that movie. That was the one that kinda drew us into discussing this, because we just thought it was so innovative."

'Boy Scouts vs. Zombies' in the Works
We've seen all kinds of foes paired up with fleshmunching zombies, but now Paramount wants to pit a team of Boy Scouts against the undead creepers. THR is reporting that comedy scribe Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder," "Men in Black III") may be making his directorial debut with the horror-comedy "Boy Scouts vs. Zombies." Yep, no mistaking what this one is about. The Girl Scouts also make an appearance as the boys try to save them from becoming a tasty snack. Are you sick of zombies and their ironic opponents yet?

Darth Maul Returns In This Awesome Trailer For ?Star Wars: The Clone Wars? (VIDEO)

Would I Lie to You 3: Film Review

The Bottom Line

Third installment of French kosher comedy series is mostly a headache.

Cast:

Richard Anconina, Jose Garcia, Bruno Solo, Vincent Elbaz, Gilber Melki, Aure Atika, Amira Casar, Lea Drucker, Elisa Tovati, Marc Andreoni

Director:

Thomas Gilou

PARIS -- France?s favorite Sephardic Rat Pack is back in garishly overstated fashion with Would I Lie to You? 3 (La Verite si je mens! 3), the latest sequel to director Thomas Gilou?s highly successful kosher comic franchise. Rehashing both cast and crew from earlier episodes, but to mostly diminishing returns, this kitschy, only occasionally funny installment has the gang of garment workers-cum-dealmakers trying to salvage their professional and personal livelihoods amid countless obstacles. Released on over 1,000 prints and raking in nearly 400K admissions on opening day, the film should score sizeable Gallic gelt, with offshore gigs limited to Francophonia.

Unapologetically bling-bling at a time when most Frenchies fear for both their jobs and their bank accounts, the scenario (by returning scribes Gerard Bitton and Michel Munz) seems more than a tad out of touch with current woes, though the filmmakers themselves shouldn?t have much to worry about: The first (and best) part of the trilogy scored 5M local admissions, the second installment nearly 8M, and Lie 3 may find itself somewhere in between ? which is definitely not its case in terms of quality.

Despite a few genuinely hilarious zingers and set-pieces, most of the comedy here is of the over-the-top, extremely loud and incredibly childish variety (what the French refer to as l?humour pipi-caca), with the returning crew of money hungry man-boys high-fiving one another every time one of them cracks a joke. All too satisfied with their macho chutzpah, not to mention with the vast amounts of wealth they have accumulated since the previous episodes ? and which, in this film?s only major plot point, they seem hell-bent on maintaining ? the originally charming bunch of Sentier (Paris? garment district) bad boys have grown considerably unlikeable with old age.

Following a lurid, James Bond-style credit sequence, we?re quickly introduced to the usual suspects of head honcho Eddie (Richard Anconina), witless middleman Serge (Jose Garcia), wisecracking sidekicks Yvan (Bruno Solo) and Dov (Vincent Elbaz), and their cigar-chomping, Bentley-driving cousin, Patrick (Gilbert Melki).

While all seems well in bargain clothing land, things soon fly off the rails when French customs officials attempt to shut down Eddie?s business, forcing him and the gang to head to China in order to cut a deal that may keep them afloat. Meanwhile, the normally solvent Patrick is subject to a nasty tax audit, which is further complicated by the fact that he?s fallen in love with his attractive auditor (Lea Drucker). Then there?s all the female trouble, with Eddie?s wife (Amira Casar) heading back to school, Serge?s wife (Elisa Tovati) hoping to get pregnant, and Dov?s wife (Aure Atika) now Yvan?s g.f., with whatever kvetching that entails.

If a few of the one-liners hit their mark early on, there?s way too much nonsense all around, especially during the Shanghai-set sequences, which offer up the types of clichs about the Chinese (yelling incomprehensible expressions, eating live worms) unseen perhaps since the days of Fu Manchu. Such moments are accompanied by plenty of candy-colored sets and costumes, overlit cinematography, and a boisterous score that plays nonstop throughout an overstuffed 2-hour running time.

Performances are typically flamboyant, with Garcia (Le Couperet) putting lots of sweat into the much-beloved Serge character. As for the talented Anconina (Police, Le Petit criminel), there?s only so far he can take Eddie this time around: Being the only Goy in the group, Eddie initially offered up an outsider?s view of the insular, Mafioso-type world of Parisian Sephardic Jews. Here he?s just one of the gang, enhancing a stereotype that the earlier films managed to both laugh at and criticize.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close: Movie Review

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" will confuse you, shock you and disturb you for most its first three quarters. It won't make sense and it might even be a frustrating experience for some. But patience is truly a virtue as all of its pieces will fit by the end of the film. "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" will feel unconventional with its no-holds-barred approach but it is also this same thing that makes it play with your emotions easily.

Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) is an inventive eleven year-old whose accidental discovery of a key in his deceased father?s belongings sets him off on an urgent search across the city for the lock it will open. A year after his father (Tom Hanks) died in the World Trade Center on September 11, on what Oskar calls ?The Worst Day?, he is determined to keep his connection to the man who cajoled him into confronting his wildest fears. Now, as Oskar crosses the five New York boroughs in a quest for the missing lock, he begins to uncover unseen links to the father he misses, to the mother (Sandra Bullock) who seems so far away from him and to the whole noisy and dangerous world around him.

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" at first glance may seem to be a film geared towards children but in fact, it is far from that. It is a bitter reflection of what transpired more than a decade ago and a believable interpretation of how those left behind might react to the worst day. But the thing about this film is that it is a confusing one for most of its parts. You will struggle to understand the lead character Oskar's actions - his actions and reactions even felt disturbing at times. The film is so hazy during Oskar's journey that we even found ourselves frustrated. But after one key moment were everything is finally revealed, it all suddenly makes sense and the frustrating parts we spoke about take on a new light. Those scenes are really reflections of Oskar's own struggle (physically and mentally) in coping with his father's death. Of course, none of these would be effective without the outstanding performance of Thomas Horn who wowed us with his versatility and complexity. In the end, this film may not be for everyone, but for those brave enough to give it a a shot and be open to its story whole-heartedly, then this is one of this year's moving films.

Rating: 4 and a half reels

Why you should watch it:
- it's unconventional, realistic and gritty approach will play with your gamut of emotions
- Thomas Horn has a lot of potential after his rookie showing here

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- the film may not be for everyone's palate as it is shocking even disturbing

The Atomic States of America: Sundance Film Review

The Bottom Line

A sobering document about the dangers of nuclear reactor and a downsized Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Directors

Sheena Joyce, Don Argott

Producer

Sheena Joyce

Park City - Out of the way, rural communities are, not surprisingly, the sites for most of this country's nuclear reactors. In this probing documentary, filmmaker Sheena Joyce and Don Argott launch a dialogue about the recent nuclear-energy construction.

PHOTOS: The Scene at Sundance Film Festival 2012

Featuring an array of scientists, locals, government leaders and Alec Baldwin at his salivating best, The Atomic States of America calls attention to the potential for nuclear disaster at such sites. Begun a year before the Fukushima catastrophe in Japan, the project should play well on the festival circuit and, likely, land a cable deal -- the Discovery Channel and the Sundance Channel seem likely venues.

The film's most stirring and provocative segment features an anti-nuke local who has spent years opposing the plants, and whose front-eye view reveals some abominable lapses in security. At his home site, one entrance on the backside is unguarded.

In short, although the support for nuclear energy crosses the political spectrum from the green energy crowd, including a speech snip from President Barack Obama on its efficacy, to staunch conservatives, there are current dangers. The most frightening aspect is impotence of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which is subject to political forces. The filmmakers provide examples of oversight inadequacy: One plant has been arrogantly allowing Tritium (a highly radioactive substance) to filter into the drinking water of a community.

It's a stimulating, well-made piece, smartly paced by editor Demian Fenton's astute cuts. At present, an underground repository in the stony wilds of the Northwest has been shuttered by the current administration, and waste is being stored and builds up at the the respective plants. That will be the case until a definitive course can be charted on nuclear-waste disposal -- not comforting to know.

Nicolas Cage Heist Movie Probably Won't Involve Nicolas Cage

nicolas-cage-happy-mardi-gras.jpg

The real-life theft of Nicolas Cage's rare copy of Action Comics No. 1--the 1938 comic that introduced the world to Superman--made headlines in 2000, and now that the comic has been recovered and sold at auction to aid in Cage's debt recovery, that story will be turned into a movie. Showing rare restraint in that he is showing any standards whatsoever, Nicolas Cage is somehow not starring in this movie.

The script is called Action No. 1, and it appropriately comes from Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, two of Hollywood's few who are even more flagrant than Nic Cage about doing pretty much anything for money. The former members of The State wrote Herbie Fully Loaded, The Pacifier, and the Night at the Museum franchise, and then they wrote a book explicitly laying out how they sold-out to write broad, formulaic family films that have made them a ton of cash.

nicolas-cage-superman.jpgLionsgate just picked up the film, which, by the Hollywood Reporter's description, sounds like Fanboys by way of Nicolas Cage, telling of a group of nerds who attempt to rob the National Treasure star of his precious Superman comic, leaving Cage only the adjacent sad, discomforting photo to celebrate his Superfandom. Nicolas Cage is going to freak the fuck out about that!

But as I said, we probably won't be seeing actual Nicolas Cage freak the fuck out in this film. Because of his exacting standards, it's reportedly unlikely that Cage will play himself. Jason Statham's name has also apparently been tossed around--it's unclear if he'd play a more willingly-balding Cage or the most unlikely nerd in history--but reps have thus far denied his involvement. Come on, Statham. This could be your way out of the rut of always playing Jason Statham-with-a-pistol and into the adjoining, far-murkier rut of playing Nicolas Cage in the single known modern film that Nicolas Cage refuses to be a part of.

"Moneyball" is a sports film like no other with its decision to concentrate on its main character Billy Beane than the actual team playing on the field. Rarely would you see actual games being played but more on the events that happen backstage - that happen at the general manager's office. This is a sports film that takes the human side of things and removes the fairy tale story on the playing field that we are all used to. These are the things that make "Moneyball" stand out from the countless sports films of past and probably any other film out now.

Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) faces a dismal situation when his small-market team the Oakland A?s lose three star players to big market teams. Driven to win, Billy decides to change the game by challenging the time-tested method of scouting players. Billy looks outside of baseball and hires Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), a Yale-educated economist. Together they take on conventional wisdom by using computer driven statistical analysis. This experiment will lead not only to a change in the way the game is played but to an outcome that would leave Billy with a new understanding that transcends the game.

"Moneyball" hits a grand slam as it features a film full of depth, intelligence minus all the boredom that are usually associated with wordy films like this one. It's amazing really because what makes sports film thrilling are usually the actual games being portrayed on the big screen. But here, it's the complete opposite as the playing field takes a back seat for the front office work that people usually don't take into account or care about for that matter. What we can say as a definite is the film is well-paced - gripping or funny at the perfect times. Of course, the most important factor for "Moneyball" are the actors and even though Brad Pitt is headlining this film, everyone else was just as good as him. We could definitely say that this is one of Brad's best performances but Jonah Hill and the other actors "on the bench" gave deep performances that can match what the lead actor did.

"Moneyball" is one of the best sports films we have seen ever and it is one of the best films to come out of Hollywood the past year. It's amazing what it has done by mixing a balance of wit, humor, seriousness but most importantly, the human factor that it captures intimately. It talks about science, statistics and computers but what makes "Moneyball" stand out are its complex characters that perfectly jive together to make a compelling sports film.

Rating: 5 reels

Why you should watch it:
- one of the best if not the best sports film we have seen
- this is Brad Pitt's best performance in our opinion and everyone else in the cast also matched his overwhelming performance
- funny yet gripping at times, this is a well-paced and well-balanced movie

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- there's really no reason not to like "Moneyball" even to non-sports fans

'Action No. 1': Nicolas Cage's Superman Comic Ordeal Turned Into Script

Way back in 2000, something very precious was stolen from Nicolas Cage's (probably now defaulted on) mansion: a rare comic book.

The comic, which featured the first-ever appearance of Superman, was MIA until 2011, when it was discovered in an abandoned locker. It was later auctioned for a whopping $2.1 million.

Now, this may not seem as titillating as say, a fire-pissing demon but this story of comic-book theft looks like it's making its way to the big screen.

Lionsgate has greenlit "Action No. 1," a comedy based on the great Cage crime from Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, writers of "Reno 911!". The story follows a gaggle of geeks who try to steal Cage's very rare comic. The writing partners will also produce the film, along with Peter Principato and Paul Young.

While Cage fans may be miffed by the project's interesting-sounding premise and potentially enjoyable movie-watching experience, fear not: Nic's sitting this one out.

Despite the fact that the part of Cage was written with the actor in mind, sources say it's unlikely he'll take the role. As for right now, no one else is up for the part. It's too bad -- imagine how many more mashups this would spawn.
