2 Broke Girls' Lady Comedy: Is CBS Ready for Funny Chicks?

On CBS, a network where comedies are dominated by men ? Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother, to name three ? 2 Broke Girls has its work cut out for it.

"I think it sets us apart," Kat Dennings says of being the only female-driven comedy on the network. "I think it's time. I think people are ready for funny chicks."

Dennings plays Max Black, a cynical diner waitress who befriends down-on-her-luck rich girl Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs). Dennings describes her character as "dude-like." "On the show, when I saw stuff I have to say, I hear dudes in the audience like, 'What?!'" she says. "It's outrageous and totally awesome. I think guys really react to that. She's just a kind of chick who guys would want to be friends with."

On the opposite side of the socioeconomic spectrum, Caroline isn't your typical rich girl. "The cool thing about Caroline is even though she looks the way she looks, she doesn't have a� mean bone in her body," Dennings says. Adds Behrs: "Some stuff might come across snobby, but it's not. She's not saying anything in a way to be mean; she's just being honest."

In fact, Behrs says, they need each other. "Caroline is just experiencing being alone for the first time, whereas Max has been alone her whole life, so now to have someone there who genuinely cares about her and her well-being, they bond over that," Behrs says. So don't expect any girl-on-girl crime. "It's not girls being mean to girls," Dennings says. "They're not like that, which is really refreshing to see a female relationship that isn't catty at all."

But will those Two and a Half Men fans watch? "The guys will just love it because we're not acting prissy. Caroline has a little bit of that residual [demeanor], but Max is just straight-up ruthless, but in a good way. Guys seem to love that because she talks like a dude."
