Seinfeld's Marble Rye Mugging Victim Dies at 92

frances-bay.jpg

Frances Bay, grandma to Happy Gilmore and dozens of other fictional characters, has reportedly died in Los Angeles due to complications due to pneumonia. She was 92.

Though Bay appeared in over 150 titles since 1978, she was known less for specific characters than she was for lending a reliably funny old lady presence to whatever she may show up in. She played grandmother to Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore, grandmother to Fonzie in Happy Days, and, perhaps most notably, appeared in several episodes of Seinfeld as Mabel Choate, the old lady who Jerry robs for the marble rye she adamantly refused to sell. As late as last year, she continued to act in a regular role on The Middle as Aunt Ginny. If you need someone to play the funny grandma on your television series, please call the costlier Cloris Leachman or Betty White from now on.
