Back in May, French video game developer Ubisoft gave us the heads up that all those popular games they've made--specifically Assassin's Creed and anything with a "Tom Clancy" prefix--would eventually be dealt the disservice of being turned into feature films. At the time, they were reportedly about to meet with studios and attempting to "identify the DNA of each game," but because that statement is essentially meaningless, it was uncertain exactly how long any of this would take. Now, it seems DNA identification must be complete, and Sony Pictures is close to a deal that will see the studio developing a film based on the Assassin's Creed series.
If you've seen commercials or screenshots from Assassin's Creed but haven't actually played it, you may suspect that the series is about this awesome guy in a white cowl who stabs people. That is largely a correct assessment, except that you're missing out on all the incredibly convoluted aspects. See, the parts where you're awesome white hood guy are actually ancestral memories of a modern-day bartender who, after being kidnapped by an evil corporation, is forced to relive past-life memories so that he may find some powerful artifacts. Even that description simplifies things, but it's something like that. That and sneaking around stabbin'.
While many software developers just sell off their movie rights and let Milla Jovovich handle the rest, Ubisoft's deal with Sony will allow them more creative control, as the company "views adaptations as a way to turn its games into larger brands that will get the titles in front of more consumers while creating lucrative new revenue sources for the company." This isn't just a movie, everyone: this is brand enlargement and new, lucrative revenue production! Like when cartoons get made into cereal.
